As summer winds down, families everywhere begin preparing for a new school year. Shopping carts fill with notebooks and pencils. Calendars become packed with orientations and meet-the-teacher nights. For foster families, back-to-school season often brings another layer of emotions that deserves just as much attention as the school supply list.
For many children in foster care, a new school year can represent much more than a fresh start. It may be another new classroom, another unfamiliar teacher or another reminder that life has looked different from their classmates’ experiences. Even positive changes can feel overwhelming when a child has experienced trauma.
Foster parents have a unique opportunity to make this season one of stability, encouragement and hope.
Create a Sense of Belonging
Simple traditions can help children feel connected. Whether it’s taking a first-day-of-school photo, choosing a special breakfast or writing an encouraging note for their lunchbox, these small moments communicate an important message: You belong here.
Children who have experienced uncertainty often find comfort in predictable family traditions, even if they are new to them.
Prepare for Big Feelings
Excitement and anxiety can exist at the same time. Some children may eagerly anticipate meeting new friends while others worry about fitting in or answering difficult questions about their family.
Give children space to talk about their feelings without trying to fix every concern immediately. Sometimes the greatest gift is simply listening and reminding them they are not facing the school year alone.
Partner with the School
Teachers, counselors and school staff play an important role in helping children succeed. Building positive relationships early creates a team of caring adults who can support a child’s academic and emotional growth.
When appropriate, communicate with school staff about strategies that help your child feel safe and successful while respecting the child’s privacy.
Celebrate Progress
Success doesn’t always look like perfect attendance or straight A’s. Sometimes success is getting on the bus without tears, making a new friend or asking for help when it’s needed.
Celebrate every victory, no matter how small. Growth happens one step at a time.
Every School Year Brings New Possibilities
At TFI, we believe every child deserves to feel safe, supported and encouraged to reach their full potential. Foster parents help make that possible every single day through patience, consistency and unconditional care.
As backpacks are packed and alarms are set, remember that your presence may be the most important thing your child carries into the new school year. Your encouragement today could shape their confidence for years to come.
